Sara Goodacre is an evolutionary biologist and geneticist working at the University of Nottingham.
Sara started her research journey as a PhD student working with Professor Bryan Clarke, one of the founders of the Frozen Ark, studying the genetic diversity of Partula land snails, a group of species that was also the subject of global conservation efforts. Sara has continued to work in the area of evolutionary biology and genetics, using molecular genetic techniques to establish the genetic diversity that exists within species of spiders and other invertebrates, in order to try to understand why this variation exists. She also studies the genetic diversification of particular gene families, such as the spider silks. Work in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Chemistry includes the production of synthetic biomaterials that are inspired by genomic characterisation of these natural proteins, in order to produce sustainable alternatives for use in medicine and engineering. Her research has received funding through the BBSRC and industrial partners, NERC, BIG Lottery, the Royal Society and the Wellcome Trust.
